In April, we received a challenge from the TMJH Teen board. Because we have a goal of making 2013 a better year for our health they decided to make us put our proverbial money where our mouth is. Here is an excerpt from said challenge…

“We, the students of Treasure Mountain Junior High School’s Leadership Class, are challenging you to a Jump on the Journey Competition. We think that we can earn more points than you can by doing healthy things and keeping ourselves fit.”

The challenge would help us to make positive, healthy changes each day and earn points for those items – we could earn points for exercise, drinking more water, reducing screen time and much more. At the end of the competition, the group with the highest average points per person would be the winner.

We accepted the challenge and received encouragement from Nann at staff meetings and reminders along the way. Because she advises the Teen Board and is our boss, she secretly wanted both groups to win.

While we likely did not beat the Teen phenoms, we aren’t necessarily ready to admit defeat either. We thank Nann and the Teen Board for helping us to make positive, healthy changes in our lives. We appreciate the opportunity to enter into friendly competition…and if we decide to admit defeat, we will likely want a rematch. We encourage you to take the challenge too and make small healthy changes each day to live a healthier, happier life.

“When I volunteered in the beginning and worked in the mobile clinic-it was very cramped and hard to do a really good job of taking care of people. Sometimes I would drive the truck to the place, fix the generator, and then start seeing patients-that was kind of fun.“

- John Hanrahan MD, A Clinic Founder & Current Staff Physician

We have experienced incredible growth over the years, nearly 9,500 patient visits in 2012. We continue to be amazed by the need for what we do in the community and also the continued support from our community.

One of the key factors in our ability to continue to provide quality medical services is the amount of time and effort that is invested into our organization by our volunteers. April was National Volunteer Appreciation Month and this is what our Volunteer Coordinator, Patti Peters, said about our network of volunteers, “Our volunteers are a dedicated group and we are so grateful for them. We couldn’t do what we do without them!”

We exists for our patients, but we thrive because of generous supporters, donors and volunteers!

Last month’s screenings at Walmart and Hotel Park City helped us introduce many to the Clinic’s services – we even made Clinic appointments on the spot. Besides checking blood pressure and blood sugar, we were sure to encourage adults to have a yearly checkup and get women over 40 into the Clinic for our free mammogram voucher program. While we are not providing medical services at the screenings – we are reaching those that need to know about our services and making referrals as appropriate.

“It was a major benefit and perk to be able to offer employees not currently covered under a medical health insurance plan. I have gotten nothing but positive feedback from those that attended and they couldn’t be more appreciative and thankful for the opportunity.”

Our local Counties offer some care our Clinic does not, but it can be confusing. ”Where can I get chronic disease care?” “How about my kids’ sick care or immunizations?” A new flyer, developed by the Clinic in partnership with our colleagues in Summit and Wasatch Counties’ Health Departments, clearly describes the various healthcare services each organization offers. It is now available on all our websites, and is being distributed around the area. Depending on where you live, you can see “where to find what” in our area.

Rich Bullough, Health Officer for Summit County, shared his enthusiasm about the new flyer: “Public Health is about partnerships…without them we will never meet the demands we face. This pamphlet will help our customers determine what services we provide, and where they may go to receive those services. It demonstrates, in a very real way, the growing partnerships between our clinics and our counties. Through this new brochure we will reduce confusion among our clients, improve the coordination of services they receive, and leverage our limited resources to better serve our citizens.”

Download it. View it. Print it here.

I’ve been a grocery checker for over 20 years, and I have another part-time job as well. No insurance. When the osteoarthritis in my knees got so bad that I could barely work a half-shift, I had to find help. Someone at work told me I should make an appointment at the Clinic. Thank goodness for Dr. Bob (Pellegrine, PHC’s Medical Director). He really saved me.”

Candy has been a patient of Dr. Bob’s for over two years, and he has encouraged her to take action to improve her health. “She’s lost 20 pounds and has been able to control her high cholesterol and blood pressure.” Candy adds, “the steroid injections he has given me have worked wonders – they’ve made it possible for me to work a full shift.”

The Clinic doesn’t just offer one-time treatment. Here patients find a place where caring doctors have the time to treat the whole person. “They’ve been a big help to me. Sometimes you know what you need to do, but it’s hard, and it helps to have support along the way.”

“I love helping the patient and doctor explore the other services the Clinic offers. While I’m translating for a Spanish-speaking patient or when I am checking a patient out, I will often think of something they might really benefit from – like a visit with the chiropractor or a nutrition class. Since I know the schedules and the availability of all the providers, I can make these connections for the patients and doctors. I like to help make the most of the wonderful resources we have in the Clinic.”

April 2013 – Students challenge Clinic staff & volunteers on the Journey

The Leadership class at Treasure Mountain Junior High School has issued a challenge to People’s Health Clinic staff and volunteers! They think that they can eat more veggies and fruit, drink more water, and exercise more in the month of April than we can. This Teen Board, which has helped out at Clinic events during the school year, may have another thing coming. Water bottles are being filled and lunchtime walks and runs are being planned. And get revved up, volunteers! We’re counting on you too!
